Trademark Report 2025

We analysed our complete dataset of 2.87 million EU trademarks from the EUIPO register: which classes are booming, how filings have grown since 1996 and who files the most.

The first look at the entire EU trademark register

Most trademark statistics stay on the surface. For this report we analysed our complete dataset from the EUIPO register — every single one of 2.87 million recorded EU trademarks. The result: a data-driven overview of which industries dominate trademark protection, how strongly filings are growing and which companies are Europe's most active applicants.

Trademark filings per year

Since the EU trademark system launched in 1996, the number of annual filings has grown steadily. Today, more than 160,000 new EU trademarks are registered every year — a sign of how important trademark protection has become for businesses.

The most popular trademark classes

Every trademark is assigned to one or more of the 45 Nice classes. This distribution shows which industries protect the most trademarks — led by software, advertising/business and IT services.

Word mark or figurative mark?

Trademarks can be filed as plain text (word mark) or as a logo/graphic (figurative mark). Word marks dominate the EU register — they offer the broadest protection because they apply regardless of graphic design.

Status of EU trademarks

Not every filed trademark is still active today. Many have expired, been withdrawn or refused. The share of actively registered marks shows how much of the register actually enjoys legal protection.

The most active trademark applicants

Behind most trademarks are large corporations with extensive portfolios. These companies each hold more than a thousand EU trademarks — from consumer goods and pharma to technology.

Methodology & source

The data is based on a complete analysis of the EUIPO trademark register (eSearch plus) covering 2,875,008 trademarks, as of February 2026. Filing trends are based on the registration date (available for 89% of marks). Class frequencies count each Nice class per mark individually. This is a purely statistical analysis, not legal advice.
